Beehive House Therapy Experience - New for summer 2026

We are delighted to announce a new addition to Nearly Home Honey & Beekeeping Experiences for the 2026 summer season. The partnership between honey bees and humans extends over 6000 years, with at least 2000 of those years involving a synergistic relationship, whereby our ancestors, be they Greek, Far and Middle East or European, recognising the many benefits of the honey bee colony, have actively worked to foster and care for colonies of bees.

What is beehive therapy

Although honey, beeswax and propolis has long been recognised for its beneficial properties and utilisec in many ways throughout history, more recently, beekeepers, particularly those in northern European countries, where challenging climatic conditions means that honey bee colonies are kept in 'bee huts' to help them survive temperature extremes, have noticed additional benefits that are now recognised more widely. These benefits arise from spending time in the 'apitherapy house', breathing in the air from the beehives and bees, absorbing the aromas from the hive and taking in the gentle hum of the bees as they work within the hive. Time spent in this environment can support overall health and wellness, as well as soothing the soul and boosting the immune and cardiovascular systems. It is also widely recognised to boost lung health, particularly amongst people who have experienced lung related problems.

Beehive therapy is a natural, holistic practice that harnesses the healing properties of bees from within their environment, which includes the aroma of propolis, hive air and the vibrations of the honey bees working within the hive, which promote health and wellbeing. Although still relatively new in the UK, it is gaining recognition for its potential benefits, a fact already well proven in many countries throughout the world. These benefits include strengthening the immune system, supporting healthy breathing and blood pressure, reducing anxiety, improving sleep, and encouraging relaxation.

How beehive therapy works

The 'apitherapy house' houses several colonies of bees, which are housed within two purpose built 'bee beds'. The hives are totally self contained, with the hive entrances enabling the bees to come and go from their hive as normal. The beds have a number of valves, which enable the air from within the hives to circulate in the house, along with any sounds from within the hives and vibrations from the movement of the bees' wings as they move around the hives.

The science behind bee hive therapy

Apitherapy is a globally recognised complementary therapy that uses the natural substances and energy of bees, such as honey, propolis, hive air and vibrations, to support health and wellness.

Sensors published research in 2021 about the chemical composition of beehive air. It found that “the gaseous mixture inside the hive is a unique and complex mixture of many different volatile compounds. These substances are produced and emitted by bees themselves (e.g., pheromones, other chemicals released to repel pests and predators, metabolites, etc.); honey, nectar, larvae, beeswax, pollen, and propolis…the specific chemical composition of beehive air is essential for the existence of a honey bee colon. It creates the odor of the nest, which has the primary and vital function of determining the identity of the colony members. Some volatile compounds drive honeybees’ hygienic behavior. The chemical composition of beehive air reflects sanitary conditions inside the hive and the health condition of the honey bee colony.” Considering these variables, one can interpret that the therapeutic benefits of beehive air inhalation can vary colony-to-colony based on the colony’s health. The research supports air variation is also attributed to the materials used to construct the hives, environmental conditions, and the equipment used in experimentation.

What your experience will involve

Sessions, which last for an hour, involve sitting or lying in the apitherapy house apitherapy is a globally recognised complementary therapy that uses the natural substances and energy of bees, such as honey, propolis, hive air and vibrations, to support health and wellness.

Our purpose-built Apitherapy House is designed to harness these benefits in a safe, enclosed environment where bees live in hives underneath the house. A secure mesh system keeps the bees separate and ensures that only the healing elements infuse the space, creating a truly immersive experience.

Beehive therapy benefits

Spending time in the beehive therapy house may help with the following:

  • Encourage deep relaxation and reduced anxiety
  • Improved breathing and reduced blood pressure
  • Improve sleep quality
  • Balances the nervous system
  • A calm, meditative state induced by the bees' gentle buzz
  • Boosted immune, nervous and muscular systems
  • Natural anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial effects from propolis.
